Red Bindi

Even though the day is waning
What if someone still comes and tells you—
"I have come
Walking a long path, crossing a long forest,
I have come to your doorstep"?
The empty chair beside you wants to say something,
Its arms trembling uncontrollably.
I said, "It is a beautiful place, and so is the pond."
Your silence quietly watched
How all the red lilies in the pond suddenly bloomed,
Waiting for droplets of rain.
Waiters like the King of Hearts in bright red attire, walked past us.
Through the glass wall, the golden nectar of the afternoon filtered in.

Someone stayed awake all night,

Yet there is such bliss even in sleeplessness!

In half-sleep, your smile, your shy presence—

Are like the mesmerized Alakananda river.

I curl up like a cat and drift to sleep in my familiar bed,

The stars descend upon the blue mosquito net

And begin to hum

The song of their grandest festival.

The time for harvest has arrived,

Radiance beams from the farmers' faces.

A mischievous boy brought back a blue bird's egg from the wild,

My thoughts are like newborn chicks,

Seeking warmth in your shy embrace.

Feather of Shadow

The white feathers of memory float in the wind.

Some feathers fall to the ground.

Some fly and spin in circles,

                           floating far away.

A single feather lands on my palm,

And a fairy-tale tree awakens.

The roads of life divide—

One road cuts through the sound of drums toward the Sal forest,

Another road stands like a lamppost,

Listening to the words of the feathers.

The Hour

The sail flies,

In the rhythm of the dance, the water keeps swirling,

Naked children play.

Who are you, sitting there, holding the loose helm of the mind?

Dreadful clouds and flashes of lightning display their terrifying sight

In the sky.

The sail tears

The helm drifts away,

Naked children are thrown into the unknown.

To the rhythm of  dance, the water keeps swirling,

To the rhythm of dance, the water keeps swirling,

To the rhythm of dance,

                       keeps swirling,

                                     the water.

The Journey

Gods are showering flowers from the sky,

As they hit the ground, they turn into paper boats.

The boats drift and sway across the chest of the earth's waters,

Roaming from dock to dock, peddling smiles, tears, sorrow, misery and hurt pride.

At the end of the day, as evening falls, they transform once more into paper birds.

Tearing through the silence, the birds make their way

To take flight.

The Solitary Yearner

Clear blue water, like a bird's egg, lies resting,

The face of God floats upon the mirror of the water.

A strange, unknown breeze comes and slowly pauses here,

Upon the watery veil the indelible mark of parting clings.
